Tsinghua University’s BGPWatch Recognized as an Outstanding Case at the World Internet Conference

On the afternoon of November 6, 2025, the "Practice Cases of Jointly Building a Community with a Shared Future in Cyberspace" were released at the World Internet Conference in Wuzhen, Zhejiang. Tsinghua University's "BGPWatch: a Collaborative BGP Routing Analyzing and Diagnosing Platform" was selected as one of the 12 outstanding cases.

Prof. Jilong Wang Presenting the BGPWatch Practice Case

The BGP routing system serves as the "navigation system" of the global internet, determining the paths through which data travels across worldwide networks. Once maliciously manipulated, this system can lead to intentional data rerouting, causing information leaks or even financial losses, a threat known as "route hijacking." Global BGP route hijacking incidents occur frequently, posing serious risks to network information security. This has become a shared governance challenge for all nations, one that no single country can effectively address alone.

Supported by the National Key Research and Development Program of China and the APNIC Foundation, the BGPWatch project team adheres to the principles of openness, equality, collaboration, and sharing. It has brought together 38 institutions from 27 countries and regions across five continents to jointly establish the BGPWatch platform for global routing security monitoring and governance. Integrated with cyberspace information systems and a cyberspace map, the platform is dedicated to advancing international collaborative governance in cyberspace.

Professor Jilong Wang from the Institute of Network Sciences and Cyberspace at Tsinghua University presented the practice case on behalf of the team. He noted that since its launch in 2020, the platform has collaborated with global partners to build a routing monitoring probe network covering over a hundred countries and regions. This network benefits education and research networks worldwide, playing a significant role in international cyberspace governance and generating broad impact.

A Snapshot of the BGPWatch Platform Interface

"BGPWatch is not merely a technical platform; it is more of a 'testing ground for global governance,'" Professor Jilong Wang stated. Leveraging this platform, the project team has published a series of papers at top-tier academic conferences and organized over one hundred international conferences and technical workshops, promoting the global dissemination of BGP security knowledge and cooperative mechanisms.

The experience of BGPWatch has shown that when nations work hand in hand, even the most complex global challenges can find meaningful solutions. Looking ahead, the team will continue to deepen international collaboration and contribute to building a more open, inclusive, and trusted digital world.
